Venice is a mysterious treat. It has so many small, twisty alleyways that even Google maps and the various guidebooks can't keep up (and that's saying something!). The best thing to do in Venice is to get lost. Seriously, get away from the centro storico (after you've gotten your fill), and discover the areas of town where the diminishing population of locals hang out. It's a conundrum of logistics: first, being a completely manmade series of islands is an incredible idea to wrap one's mind around, and secondly, with not a single car to be found within the city limits, the use of boats is a beautiful ballet on the canals. It is an amazingly mysterious, artistic, and seagull-filled place to call home, if even just for a few days.
